During April, Desert Diamond Casinos & Entertainment is celebrating 30 years as a premier entertainment destination in Southern Arizona. The month-long festivities include fantastic music, special discounts, and more than $1 million in giveaways.

Thirty Years of Growth

While the history of gaming for the Tohono O’odham Nation dates back thousands of years, the start of modern gaming occurred on April 17, 1984 when the doors opened on the Papago Bingo Hall. As this enterprise quickly expanded, the Nation took a leadership role in negotiations with the State of Arizona for a tribal gaming compact, ultimately resulting in the opening of the first Desert Diamond Casino in 1993.

Nearly a decade later, in 2002, the Nation again took a lead role in securing passage of Proposition 202, which established updated guidelines for Indian gaming and ensured that it will continue well into the future. Now Desert Diamond Casinos & Entertainment has grown to encompass three unique facilities near Tucson, Sahuarita, and Why, Arizona. Each location is commemorating this amazing thirty-year milestone with major offers and special prizes.

Thirty years of gaming have made a tremendous difference on the Tohono O’odham Nation and across Arizona. On the Nation, gaming has created jobs, funded new health care, elder care and community facilities, and allowed the Nation to establish its own fire department.

In the ten years since the current gaming compacts were approved by voters, tribal casinos across the state have contributed more than $780 million through revenue sharing to support Arizona’s state and local governments, education, health care, public safety, and other important needs. During this time, the Tohono O’odham Nation itself has made direct revenue sharing grants to more than 250 local governments and community programs that provide important public services.

And in just the past decade, Desert Diamond Casinos & Entertainment has donated more than $4 million in charitable contributions to almost 600 nonprofit organizations in Arizona, in addition to sponsoring major community events every year.

Carrying On the Mission

With a spectacular first thirty years of excitement, entertainment, and opportunity, the future looks bright for Desert Diamond Casinos & Entertainment. The gaming enterprise recently rolled out a new tiered Rewards Card program featuring extra rewards and savings, as well as Arizona’s first Tribute Card for veterans and active military.

Through sponsorships, donations, and revenue sharing, Desert Diamond Casinos continues to support the wider Arizona community as it carries on the mission of service to the Tohono O’odham Nation that began at a bingo hall thirty years ago.
